Geographic Location
Where you live has a great impact on your food habits. Consider the following examples.
• Certain foods cannot be grown in certain areas. Strawberries cannot be grown in areas that encounter cold frosts, as such conditions cause damage to the quality of the fruit. Wheat grows in hot, mostly dry conditions.
• Some isolated places do not get regular fresh food deliveries. If you lived in the desert of Central Australia, you would be lucky to receive a delivery of fresh fruit and vegetables once a fortnight!
• Climates in certain areas restrict food availability. Tropical fruits are available in warm conditions, but are hard to obtain at any other time of the year. It is unlikely that you would be eating fresh mangoes in the middle of winter, as the supply would be limited and the cost would be prohibitive. Drought or flood in an area can affect foods available. This could have a great impact on food supply and food cost.
• The landforms, soil types and frequency of rain in all continents of the world are different, and the conditions in each region will dictate which foods can be grown successfully.

Activity: What do people eat around the world?
Vocabulary list - Global interdependence: the idea that we must rely on other countries to provide some of the goods that we need, just as they must rely on us.
In pairs or small groups (no more than 3) select a country to research. Use the following questions to guide your research:
From this research find recipe's that would reflect what people from this country would eat for breakfast, lunch and dinner. Justify your choices. Be ready to share your findings with the rest of the class.

In pairs or small groups (no more than 3) select a country to research. Use the following questions to guide your research:
- What are some of the main foods eaten in this country?
- What are some of the foods produced in this country?
- What is the climate of this country?
- How might the climate of the country determine the foods that are produced there?
- Would we be able to produce the same foods in this country? Why or why not?
- Can you think of a product that would be difficult to produce in that country? Why? How might that country get that product?
