Mass Media
The media are responsible for advertising, marketing and reporting on issues in today’s society. You cannot avoid being exposed to persuasive marketing through television, magazines, newspapers, radio and the internet. Slogans and jingles are always there to remind you of particular foods. Multinational food companies such as McDonald’s advertise in public locations, billboards and bus stops, so that you are constantly aware that these foods are available.
Advertising makes use of unrealistic and manipulated body images, mainly in magazines and television targeted at teens and young adults. A thin model is often shown eating food such as pizza or fried chicken. Models do not usually have curvaceous hips and breasts, so many teenagers start to become unnecessarily concerned about their body image. Girls often cut out meats and carbohydrate foods, leaving them lacking in iron and energy.
