Religion
Within cultures, people select foods to conform to particular styles of eating. they also may have religious beliefs about particular foods and how they should be prepared and served.
Religious food practices vary widely. Prohibitions and restrictions even within a particular faith may change between one suburb and the next. National variations are also common. Further, individual adherence to a religious diet is often based on how strongly the person believes in the religion to which they belong. Religious ties can have a direct impact on the food choices and habits of an individual. Religious restrictions or taboos may dictate food habits. For example: • Jews do not consume meat and milk in the same meal • Jews and Muslims do not eat any pork products • Muslims fast for one month every year • Hindus do not eat beef • Christians do not eat meat on Good Friday. |
